If escaping modern life and finding a sense of freedom in a rugged and remote setting is a must-have for your next glamping holiday, you’re going to love Wigwam® Holidays Shulista Croft.
This incredible glamping site sits on a 16-acre traditional working croft on the edge of the Trotternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. The site is made up of eight wooden glamping cabins. Four Running Water Deluxe cabins have en-suite facilities and sleep up to four people, while four Big Chief Wigwam® Cabins also sleep four and have cooking and washing facilities nearby.
All cabins are warm and cosy: fully heated, insulated and double-glazed, and each one comes with an outdoor dining area complete with a BBQ and a firepit. These make the site perfect for whiling away the evening in the warm glow of the fire with a majestic night sky above your heads.
Life is calm on the croft, located as it is in the heart of the Shulista Highland crofting community. Surrounded by nature, sea eagles and golden eagles fly overhead while herds of sheep, rams and a gaggle of free-range chickens graze around you. The site is wide and green with plenty of space to run around and play with views across the sea and distant mountains.
Whether you’re a frequent visitor to the Isle of Skye or planning your first trip, it won’t take long to find some great activities for you and your family in the area. From hillwalking to skydiving and from bird watching to fine dining, Wigwam® Holidays Shulista Croft is an ideal base for some unique days out on the island.
Trotternish Peninsula boasts some of the best walks the Isle of Skye has to offer, and perhaps the best walk of them all is accessed directly from Wigwam® Holidays Shulista Croft: Rubha Hunish is a favourite among both locals and visitors year-round, and a walk to this, the northernmost point of the island, starts from the footpath on the edge of the croft.
This walk takes you past a mountain bothy, through the Erisco village ruins and out to the peninsula where, on a clear day, you can see over to the Outer Hebrides. Rubha Hunish is the perfect place for spotting some wildlife in the sky and sea, so if you want to catch sight of minke whales, dolphins, orcas, basking sharks and swooping seabirds, don’t forget to pack your binoculars!
This lovely glamping site also connects to a number of other great walks in the area, including trails out to the gorgeous Quiraing landslip and a gentle ten-minute stroll from the site to the atmospheric ruins of Duntulm Castle. This formidable monument began its life as an Iron Age fort. In the 1500s it was lived in by the MacLeods of Skye and visited by James V.
Before it was abandoned, the castle was the seat of the Clan McDonald. Now reduced to ruins, the castle sits on the edge of a cliff, surrounded on all sides by the wild sea. The stories and legends surrounding the castle are many and it is not surprising to learn there are plenty of ghost stories to lend to its mystery and intrigue.
Once you’ve explored your glamping site and nearby surroundings, you’ll be delighted by how close you are to other alternative activities and attractions are - and how many fascinating ways there are to enjoy your holiday on the Isle of Skye!
Spend a couple of hours poking around the Museum of Island Life - it’s a fascinating trip through the ages. Equally exciting is a trip to Staffin - just a ten-minute drive from Wigwam® Holidays Shulista Croft! As well as craft shops and delicious cafes, you’ll find a wonderful beach here, perfect for rock-pooling and relaxing.
While digging around in the sand here, you may find more than you bargained for as this beach is the site of Scotland’s first-ever ‘in-situ’ dinosaur tracks discovery. The tracks have now been preserved in sandstone so you can literally walk in the footsteps of giants when the tide is low. You’ll learn more about the tracks and the area’s prehistoric inhabitants in the nearby Staffin Dinosaur Museum, packed with fossils, local geology facts and exhibitions.
