Glamping in Shetland is a wonderful way to get to know this magical island. You can’t help but get up close to nature and feel connected to the landscape and incredible history that seems to be everywhere.
Burravoe Wigwams® is the perfect spot for setting up your base and the two warm and comfortable Wigwam® cabins are a wonderful alternative to the more traditional accommodation on the island such as B&Bs. The glamping pods are nestled among 50 acres of trees. Trees are unusual on Shetland (and indeed many of the Scottish isles) so the shelter and secluded nooks of the cabin settings make them a popular choice for glampers looking for a rural escape. Especially at high season!
The Wigwam® cabins are protected from the weather with insulated walls, double glazed windows and patio doors, making them extra cosy on even the coldest days. Each cabin is fitted out with all the luxuries you could possibly need for a wonderful Shetland glamping adventure. There’s a fitted kitchenette for your convenience, which comes with an electric two ring hob, a fridge, toaster, microwave and a dining table and chairs. There are en-suite shower and bathroom facilities too, and hot water and electric heating throughout.
The comfortable mattresses and blackout curtains ensure a glorious night’s sleep and the glamping site’s location takes you far away from any noise that might hinder that! The only sounds you’ll notice is the rustle of the breeze in the trees and the odd moo from the cows!
Burravoe Wigwams® sit on the edge of a traditional working croft. Guests are welcome to wander around the gardens and greet the livestock as they go about their business. The free-range chickens might just pay you a visit if you’re lucky, and you can buy their eggs from the onsite honesty shop.
And what better way to enjoy those eggs than on a tasty campfire grill on your own personal BBQ and firepit? You can tuck into your fine grub in the comfort of the alfresco picnic bench which sits just outside your cabin and marvel at the peace and quiet of this fabulous location.
The glamping site is just a few minutes walk to the beach which is perfect for rock pooling and seashell gathering. If the sea looks a little too chilly to splash about in, it’s easy enough to walk to the village of Brae - just 5 minutes walk from the site - where you can jump in the local swimming pool instead! And as all swimmers know, there’s nothing quite like a shivery bite after a swim, so you’ll be glad to know the award-winning Frankie’s fish & chip shop is nearby.
This lovely little glamping site is centrally located on the island, making it easy to get out and explore. There’s something for everyone here, gentle crafting afternoons with Fair Isle Knitting sessions or exploring the vibrant Viking history and ancient archaeology. The whole island also plays host to year-round events to delight and inspire, including the Folk Frenzy music festival, local produce food festivals and possibly the most well-known on Shetland - the Up Helly Aa. This is a wonderfully atmospheric fire festival which takes place in Lerwick at the end of January. The festival takes inspiration from the island’s rich Viking history and features parades, fire spectacles, drumming and parades.
Burravoe Wigwams® is open all-year-round so you can experience the sight of this exciting festival while enjoying winter glamping in your toasty warm Wigwam® cabin.
