Get in touch with the nature of Northumberland

Northumberland National Park is known for some of England’s cleanest rivers and air as well as its spectacularly dark night sky. With rolling moorland, lush woodlands that form Kielder Forest and hills just waiting to be conquered, this is truly a hiker’s paradise.

The Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is an excellent place to do some stargazing. It’s home to Europe's largest area of protected sky and is the best place in England to catch a glimpse of the elusive aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights.

And no trip to Northumberland would be complete without some time spent in a village pub! After a day exploring the great outdoors, warm your fingers and toes by the fire as you enjoy a big bowl of pan haggerty, a local dish made up of cheese, potatoes and onions, and enjoying the company of the locals.

Explore historic Northumberland

Famously a filming location for the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, the impressive Alnwick Castle is a truly fascinating place to visit.

Tours are available through the impressive rooms of the stately home, and the castle also has exhibitions to help you learn more about the history of the castle and the surrounding areas. There are also broomstick flying lessons, a dragon quest, treasure hunts, a great cafe and a gift shop. The Alnwick Gardens are also fascinating, making for a full day of exploration.

The Vindolanda Roman Fort is located south of Hadrian’s Wall and is said to be one of the best places to get to know more about England’s history with the Roman Empire. There is so much to learn about life in the Roman army here that the charitable trust that looks after the site suggests taking a whole day to visit the museum and fort remains.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a great place to learn more about the Vikings and Christianity. Make sure you check the tide times so you can follow the Pilgrim's Path to walk right onto this serene island. Steeped in history dating back to the year 635, you can learn about how Christianity flourished here and how the Vikings nearly destroyed it entirely. Make sure you also get a taste of the delicious coffee and mead brewed on the island.
